What is dermaplaning?

Person dermaplaning their face

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive facial skin procedure that uses a sharp blade for exfoliation, while also removing vellus hairs (aka peach fuzz). Professional dermaplaning is done by estheticians, registered nurses, and dermatologists in an office using a scalpel.

On the other hand, at-home dermaplaning is less expensive, less intense, and growing in popularity. It provides similar benefits while employing tools that anyone can safely use at home. Traditionally, at-home dermaplaning tools are comprised of a steel blade with wire or scalloped guards welded to it, providing a barrier between the skin and the bare blade. This blade protection is what makes dermaplaning at-home safe.

What does it feel like?

Let's put your mind at ease. Just like shaving, you can feel it happening, but it doesn't hurt. It’s generally very easy to learn and perform on your own. Like most personal care routines, following a few guidelines goes a long way.

How do you dermaplane at home?

1: Clean your face completely.

2: Use on either dry skin or apply a small amount of Leaf Shave Oil. Using a little oil helps the blade glide smoothly. If you’re unsure about which method works best for your skin, ask your dermatologist.

3: Hold your skin taut and place the blade at a 45-degree angle against your skin. Use light pressure, and move in short downward and inward strokes towards the center of your face. Use all over your face, adjusting pressure on areas that are not flat.

4: Rinse your skin and finish with an oil for moisture.

How often should you dermaplane?

Dermaplaning is not something you need to do every day. It is recommended to use the tool every 1-4 weeks or as needed. Everyone’s skin type and hair growth are different, and just like the hair on your head or toes, only you will feel when the time is right for you. It’s easy to add to your skincare routine, there is no downtime post-dermaplaning.

It's important to note that no one should feel pressured to remove their body hair for any reason. People remove hair for a variety of personal reasons, and we should all respect that personal choice.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

What can you expect from a home dermaplaning routine? There are both skin-care benefits and beauty-routine benefits.

Dermaplaning reveals soft, glowing skin as peach fuzz and dead skin cells are removed. Cell turnover occurs as you physically exfoliate, promoting new skin cells to the surface, which can help soften the appearance of fine lines and improve hyperpigmentation.

This process also makes the skin more permeable, allowing for better absorption of skincare products and serums. If you wear makeup, it will sit better after removing dry skin. Fresh skin cells allow for better blending of makeup and smoother texture of skin when makeup is applied.

How is this different from shaving?

Shaving and dermaplaning both remove hair. Mechanically, they're doing this in two different ways. Traditional shaving razors approach hair at a shallower angle with bare blades. At-home dermaplaners approach hair at a steeper angle, purposefully both removing the fine hairs on your face and providing more effective exfoliation than a regular razor.
